After a Summer that never arrived, we had 12 pairs in the event, 5 of which were past champions and 2 new players, Hobbs and Walters. Playing the Red course in the morning teams Davenport & Hanna and Harnett & Simpson both birdied the 1st hole for 4 points and were joint leaders with 12 points after 4 holes. The Par 4 8th stopped Harnett & Simpson in their tracks with Nil points with Davenport and Hanna scoring 33 on the front nine holes. Team Pitchford & Pritchard started slowly with only 7 points on the Better ball holes but with 3 gross birdies on the “Both scores count” holes had 36 points and led at the turn.
The back 9 played more difficult with Jameson & Jones scoring 30 points courtesy of Jones’ birdie 2 for 4 points on the challenging Par 3 - 16th. After 18 holes The Berkshire pairing of Lumley & Taberer led with 63, with Hedges & now Bionic Taylor (hip replacement 5 months earlier) on 59, with the pairings of Davenport & Hanna and Pitchford & Pritchard on 58. Maddison took the prize for closest to the pin on the 18th, but alas didn’t bank the birdie!
The afternoon started with the closest to the pin (should be changed to closest to the green) was won by Jameson but Bionic Taylor was the only player to get a birdie 2. Jameson & Jones and Hedges & Taylor both scored 12 points on the better ball holes. Hobbs had 3 birdies on the front 9 holes and with partner Grech were the only team to score 7 points on a hole in the afternoon rounds to give them 32 points with 5 teams scoring 31 points.
Jameson birdied the 11th and 13th to give Jameson & Jones the best of the day 14 points on the Better ball holes, but Jameson got stuck on the bogey train over the last 5 holes to finish 3rd on 116 points on countback over Davenport and Hanna. Jackson & Naylor had the best of the afternoon with 63 points with Naylor shooting 1 over par. Hedges & Bionic Taylor finished strongly with 62 points to take their 3rd Kangaroo Cup title.
